Europe covered by a wave of mergers and acquisitions

The wave of corporate mergers and acquisitions that captured the United States this year has reached the Old World. The volume of transactions of this kind has reached the highest level in Europe over the past five years.

In 2005, the volume of both the European and American mergers market reached 900 billion euros. But compared with last year, the pace of mergers in Europe is ahead of the US – 49 % versus 30 %. Among the largest operations of this kind this year, the following pairs are worth noting: Procter & Gamble and Gillette, UFJ and the Mitsubishi Tokyo financial group, as well as the Spanish giants Gas Natural and Endesa. Goldman Sax, Morgan Stanley, GP Morgan Chase and City Group are the leaders by the number of transactions and profits in the bank ranking table.
