The plan for sending the EU civilian-police mission EULEX to Kosovo was tentatively approved by EU member states.
Cyprus, which had previously threatened to block the resolution of this issue, abstained in the vote.
A decision on the timing of the contingent’s dispatch to Kosovo and when its formation will begin has not yet been made.
In December 2007, the European Union decided to send a civilian police mission EULEX of 1800 to Kosovo. It should replace the current UN mission there.
The transition of Kosovo under the control of the EU mission is one of the stages in the declaration of “controlled” independence of the region.
