The European Commission proposes to introduce the trademark “Made in EU”

The European Commission invites the EU member states to introduce a special brand for food and beverages – “Made in EU”.

The corresponding proposal, whose purpose is to identify food manufactured in the EU, was put forward by the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Marcos Cyprianou.

He proposes to appropriate the label “Made in EU” including products manufactured on imported raw materials, with the exception of meat.

The draft legislative initiative developed by Cyprian, which is expected to be officially unveiled in December, is not fundamentally new in nature.

In 2004, the European Commission was forced to abandon a similar idea due to strong opposition from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as the desire of a number of other EU members to maintain national trade labels.
