German tanks and IFV arrived in Lithuania
The Bundeswehr sent heavy equipment to Lithuania. 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles were loaded onto a train in Bavarian Grafenwer on February 21. 6 Leopard 2 tanks were sent on Monday. It will take 4 days to reach the base in Lithuanian Rukle technique.
Thus, Germany completed the material support of the military base in Rukla. Since mid-January, 120 containers of military cargo and 200 vehicles have been sent to Lithuania. About 300 German soldiers are already at the base, another 150 will be redeployed there in the near future.
At the July summit, the Alliance decided to deploy four NATO battalions on the eastern flank to the Baltic countries and Poland as a guarantee of their security against the background of Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Germany will command the NATO Allied International Battalion in Lithuania, with a total strength of about 1,200. The US will command in Poland, the British in Estonia, and the Canadians in Latvia.
It took several days to transport 20 infantry fighting vehicles and 6 tanks from Bavaria to Lithuania. The allied NATO battalion in Rukle under the German command is fully equipped.
The heavy equipment division of the Bundeswehr on Friday, February 24, safely reached Lithuania, said a representative of the German armed forces. Twenty Marder infantry fighting vehicles and 6 Leopard 2 tanks were delivered by rail to the Sheshtokai station. From Sheshtokay they will be transported to the place of permanent deployment – to the military base of Rukla.
