Arctic Challenge 2017

The Pentagon has deployed several strategic B-52H bombers capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to the United Kingdom at the Fairford airbase. This was reported on June 1 by the European command of the US Armed Forces.

Aircraft and 800 troops will be stationed at an air base in the UK to support exercises with NATO allies in Europe in June.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress (“Stratosphere Fortress”) – American multifunctional heavy ultra-long-range intercontinental strategic bomber-bomber of the second generation of the Boeing company, which has been in service with the US Air Force since 1955. At subsonic speeds at altitudes up to 15 kilometers, it is capable of carrying various types of weapons, including atomic bombs. The main task for which the B-52 was being developed was to deliver two thermonuclear bombs of high power (B-53) to any point in the USSR.

B-53 – the American thermonuclear bomb, which is the oldest and most powerful nuclear weapon, which was in the arsenal of US strategic nuclear forces until 1997. Later it was replaced in the Air Force with the free-falling bomb B61 mod.11, which is currently undergoing modernization.

Bombers will take part in the military exercises Arctic Challenge, Saber Strike and BALTOPS, which are held, including in the territory of neighboring countries with Russia.

The Arctic Challenge exercises take place this year from May 22 to June 2 in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Saber Strike exercises – from May 28 to June 24 in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. BALTOPS exercises – from June 1 to 16 in the Baltic Sea with a route from Polish Szczecin to German Kiel.
