South Ossetia asks to recognize its independence

The Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia appealed to the UN Secretary General, the President of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council, the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the heads of state and parliaments of the CIS and European Union countries with a request to recognize the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. “After the appearance of the Kosovo precedent,” the parliamentarians said, “there was convincing confirmation that the resolution of regional conflicts is based not only on the principle of the territorial integrity of states.”

The deputies recalled the nationwide referendum, which took place in South Ossetia under the supervision of international observers in November 2006. Then, for the independence of South Ossetia, 99% of the residents of the republic voted.

The leadership of Abkhazia, in turn, said that the parliament of the republic will make a similar request before the end of the week.
