EU Summit

Following the results of the EU summit on the situation in the Caucasus, a final press conference was held. The declaration adopted by the summit indicates that the next round of negotiations between the EU and Russia on the development of an agreement on strategic partnership depends on Russia’s implementation of the six-point ceasefire agreement in Georgia.

“We want partnership with Russia,” said French President Sarkozy, “we want peace.” But we demand that Russia respect the territorial integrity of neighboring states. On September 8, we will head to Moscow and hold consultations there with the Russian leadership on what needs to be done next. ”

The head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, in particular, noted:

“The dramatic events,” said EC President Barroso, “raised a very serious matter regarding relations between the EU and Russia. We need a modern partnership based on fundamental shared values. I think that this is in the interests of both parties – both Russia and the European Union. ”

Regarding the status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the press conference participants noted that the 6-point agreement “provides for an international discussion about this, but the status should be discussed as part of Georgia.
