EU countries have 17.4 million unemployed

In total, in July of this year, there were 17.4 million unemployed in the 25 EU member states.

At the same time, in 12 EU countries that switched to the euro, the total number of unemployed men and women amounted to 11.5 million.

Such data were released by the European Statistical Bureau Eurostat.

On the whole, in July this year, the unemployment rate for 25 EU member states remained at the level of June – 8.0% of the economically active population.

In July – September 2005, this indicator was 8.7%.

According to Eurostat, in the eurozone countries the unemployment rate also did not change compared to June – 7.8%, and in July 2005 it reached 8.6%.

In the list of 25 EU countries, the best employment situation is in the Netherlands, where the unemployment rate in July was 3.9%, in Denmark (3.9% – data for June), Estonia (4.2%), and Ireland (4, 4%), Luxembourg (4.8%).

The highest unemployment rates in the EU are registered in Poland (15.0%), Slovakia (14.0%), Greece (9.2% in the first quarter of 2006), France (8.9%), Belgium (8.7 %).

According to Eurostat, in July 2006 the unemployment rate among men in the EU as a whole decreased compared with June July 2005 from 7.9% to 7.1%, and in the eurozone states – from 7.4% to 6.8% .

Among women in the EU countries, unemployment also fell over the indicated period from 9.8% to 9.0%, in the euro area – from 9.8% to 9.0%.
